Jesus makes an interesting comment to the religious police in the Gospel of John Chapter 5, verses 37-39.
He is talking to religious leaders were giving him trouble. These were those who had Old Testaments and knew it very well. However Jesus said to them, ” you have never heard his voice”- how can this be as they studied the Old Testament diligently and heard it read three times each Saturday?
Jesus assumes reading the Bible with a heard heart would prevent “God’s voice” being heard in human hearts. Thus he assumes that when God breathes his Spirit into his word it is heard in our human hearts – which is what happened to that hard-hearted Pharisee Saul on the road to Damascus. When God speaks in this way who can resist?
