Making Disciples Without A Bible

Just how were the first disciples made?

Jesus did not use a text, but by teaching something new and not yet written – “ preaching the good news of the Kingdom of God” -Luke 4.43. (Note: Jesus assumed but did not teach the Old Testament like we do!)

And how was this to initially happen after Jesus went to Heaven?

The Holy Spirit would do it as there was no written New Testament yet.

The Spirit would “take from what is mine and make it known to you” – John 16.15.

And that is just what happened in the life of the greatest disciple in the New Testament – Paul. He was not directly taught by Jesus but by the Holy Spirit after Jesus had gone back to heaven – before the New Testament had been written.

So how did he come to know so much about Jesus and the ways of God and the Gospel?

By direct download from Jesus Spirit. He took of Jesus teaching, purpose and ways and shaping and growing Paul – and all without a New Testament nearby.

What does this means for the bookish approach of todays Church? One thing it means is that we are not using all of Jesus recommended methodology – his Spirit is missing. If we studied the New Testament period we too would learn to do it the way Jesus did! This is one thing missing from todays Church.
